We know why you ride. Freedom. Exhilaration. Sport. Adventure. And we’re determined to keep it that way. While Point Two does not claim to eliminate the risk of injury to a rider wearing an air vest, we have shown that wearing a well-maintained and properly connected Point Two air vest provides riders with greatly increased injury protection. It’s our contribution to giving you the confidence to ride or the ability to get back up and ride again if that be the case.
We've gone to great lengths to create a safer air vest. In this video you will see, in action, how our vest can keep your chest from impacting an object like the road or a guard rail. It should be noted that the test dummy you're watching is actually being dropped higher than what is required. Why did we have it tested that way? Because we know it matters, and you're no dummy.
When a rider separates from his bike, the Point Two air vest will inflate within one tenth of a second. It will absorb shock, distribute impact and support your spinal column. In addition to your spine, it will protect your collarbones, ribs, coccyx and internal organs. So, if all of this vital protection doesn’t affect your choice in gear, let us remind you that the best thing to be wearing after a fall, other than our air vest, is a grin.
We know what can go wrong on a bike. We want to eliminate as much of the danger as possible to make every ride safer. That’s why we are constantly working to improve inflation rates, increase coverage but not weight, and maintain a high level of comfort and mobility. We’ve done the calculations and we’ve done the testing so we’re confident about the difference an air vest can make while you are on the bike or off.
The University of Florence translated the results of wearing an air vest into graphs and statistics.
A goal was to create numerical simulations of bike accidents and bad falls and then compare the injuries on the head, neck, back, thorax and hips of a biometric mannequin wearing an air vest and a mannequin not wearing an air vest.
Because every accident is unique it was important to simulate different accident situations. The University of Florence was able to provide data using a software called MADYMO.
The results proved how exceptional the air vest is in protecting from injury. In fact, these tests showed new data about even more body protection than expected. For example, head lesions are indirectly reduced by the air vest’s protective action. A promising surprise, for sure.
A very common situation in the city. The motorcycle impacts the car orthogonally and the dummy is ejected towards the front. This situation was tested at 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 km/hour.
The dummy falls on his back from different heights ranging from 1 to 2 meters. This simulation demonstrates the airbag jacket's effectiveness in protecting the spine. The researches have concluded that the most vulnerable part was the neck that rotates much more than the rest of the spine.
The dummy impacts a pole horizontally at a speed of: 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 km/h. This simulation is to show the airbag jacket's effectiveness on the torso when the rider hits an obstacle after flying off the motorcycle.
Here’s the point. When you are travelling at, let’s say 60mph, and you come off the bike. Would you rather travel 10ft before your air vest inflates (your bike is probably 5-6ft for reference), or 45ft? It doesn’t take a mathematician to answer this one. The faster your air vest inflates, the faster you have more protection. The faster you have more protection, the faster you may be able to get up afterward.
This graph compares the distance a rider travels before full vest inflation after a 60mph crash. The red line measures a Point Two Air Vest with a .080 inflation rate, the blue line measures a competitor’s air vest with a .5 inflation rate.
It is required that a product for highway use gets approved by a testing house. We are so dedicated to top-level safety that we quadruple checked our air vests. We had it tested by, not one, but four top-tier, internationally renowned test houses. And we asked to increase to the test measurements beyond the standard. In one impact test we asked to double the test from 2.5 kg to 5 kg. We not only passed every test beyond the normal specs and got highway use approval, we are one of only two air vests in the world approved for racing use. This means we have certification to European Standards EN 1621-4:2013. If your air vest doesn’t have this certification, ask yourself if you’re OK with that. We weren’t.
Our air vests have one single air bag. There are no long tubes or narrow passages to choke the CO2 dispersion. There are no separate chambers that can fold over on each other when a bend in the body occurs. This is why our air bags inflate faster than others on the market. Our air vests are made with just one, continuous air bag, that expands in .080 seconds to give you a big, comforting air hug.
We recommend servicing your air vest or air jacket yearly, after six inflations (holy cow, you must be a racer if you crash six times in one year) or a particularly heavy fall. This ensures it is in optimal working order. We professionally clean the shell, clean the trigger and pressure test the air bag. This way, it’s like a brand new vest again.
All Point Two air vests and jackets come with a lifetime warranty on the air bag component. This warranty requires having the air vest or jacket serviced annually by Point Two.
